QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

  1. Do I need to be a registered member of Our Lady of Hope Parish to have my child baptized here?
    - Yes. Visit our "Newcomer's Table" after a Saturday or Sunday Mass to register.
  2. At what age should an infant or child be baptized?
    - As an infant or child under 7 years of age. Children, age seven or older, and adults are initiated into the Catholic church through the process called the "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). We have a special group for children and another for adults. Call the parish office for more information about RCIA for children or adults.
  3. Who may serve as a Godparent?
    - Only a fully initiated, practicing Catholic who is, at least, 16 years of age, and is not the parent of the child to be baptized, may serve as godparent.
    - A child must have one godparent who meets that definition. A non-Catholic Christian may serve, in addition, as a Christian witness, but there must be one Catholic godparent.
    - There may be two Catholic godparents, one male and one female, if the family wants this.
  4. Are there requirements to have a child baptized at Our Lady of Hope?
    - Yes, the parents must schedule an appointment with Father Stephen Ogonwa (Telephone: 386-788-6144) and must attend our Baptism class prior to the Baptism of their child. Godparents are welcome to attend these with the parents, if they are able.
  5. When are Baptism Classes held?
    - The classes are held the Monday before the last Sunday at 6:30 pm in the Our Lady of Hope Room, in the Parish Office Building.
  6. When are Baptisms held?
    - Baptisms are on the last Sunday of each month after the 11:00 am Mass. Parents and Godparents attend that Mass with the child.
